Nella sua serie “Decisive Moments: Brick Lane”, Sonya Newell-Smith mostra la sua capacità di catturare un momento nella tradizione classica del fotogiornalismo. Allo stesso tempo, ci presenta la fotografia di strada con un senso di umorismo e comprensione per le emozioni umane. Le sue foto, dirette e schiette, rispecchiano la vita quotidiana e rivelano una visione della diversità, della vivacità e dell’energia di Brick Lane di Londra, ed esprimono una profonda passione per questo ambiente e la sua gente.

La capacità di catturare tali istanti di quasi devozione a ciò che le persone stanno facendo rende questa serie speciale. I volti e i ritratti di musicisti dedicati alle loro attività fanno sorgere le emozioni. Si tratta di gesti, sguardi e della perfetta combinazione con lo sfondo, che spesso rappresenta un volto, un occhio, un’espressione. Ci sono così tanti dettagli da scoprire, momenti particolari catturati dalla macchina fotografica con colori vividi.

Sonya Newell-Smith ha la capacità di sfruttare al meglio le situazioni spontanee. È pronta con la sua macchina fotografica quando accade l’imprevisto. Sono progetti a lungo termine che le hanno consentito di rendere giustizia ad un argomento, piuttosto che accontentarsi di una visione superficiale. In questo modo, i momenti fissati ci offrono spunti che sollevano interrogativi nelle nostre menti. Un giorno rappresenteranno una preziosa documentazione delle nostre abitudini, gesti, interazioni, delle incurie e di istanti fugaci senza apparente significato. Che dono che qualcuno abbia l’occhio per catturare questi momenti particolari che viviamo e vediamo, ma che non sempre percepiamo.

È evidente che Sonya ha allenato l’occhio da fotografa per tutta la sua vita. Le sue foto non restano alla superficie ma vanno in profondità attraverso la sua capacità di catturare quell’istante particolare: il momento decisivo delle interazioni quotidiane.

In her series ‘Decisive Moments: Brick Lane’, Sonya Newell-Smith shows her ability to capture a moment in the classic tradition of photo-journalism. At the same time, she presents us street photography with a fundamental sense of humour and understanding for human emotions, in her direct and candid photos which mirror daily life. Her photos reveal an insight into the diversity, vibrancy and energy of the place, and they express a deep passion for this environment and its people.

Her ability to capture such instants of almost devotion to what people are doing makes this series special. Emotions arise when looking at the faces and portraits of dedicated musicians. It’s all about gestures and looks and the perfect combination with the background – often representing a face, an eye, an expression. There are so many details that she discovers and so many particular moments that she freezes with vivid colours.

She has the ability to make the most of a spontaneous photo-opportunity, she is ready with her camera when the unforeseen happens. It is the focus on long-term projects which enables her to deploy all her skills to do justice to a subject, instead of settling for a more superficial view. This way, these frozen moments offer us insights that raise questions in our minds, and which one day later in our lives will represent a valuable documentation of our momentary habits, gestures, interactions, carelessness, and fugitive instants. What a gift that someone has the eye to capture these particular moments that we live and see but do not always perceive.

It becomes apparent that Sonya’s photography is by someone who has developed a trained eye over a whole lifetime. Her photos do not remain at the surface but go into depth through her focus and her ability to capture that particular instant: the decisive moment of daily interactions.
